La eficacia del masaje en el cólico del lactante: revisión sistemática

Abstract

JUSTIFICACIÓN: El cólico del lactante es una alteración benigna y muy frecuente en las primeras etapas de la vida que causa preocupación tanto en cuidadores como en pediatras. Se describe el cólico como un síndrome conductual de etiología desconocida, caracterizado por llanto persistente e inconsolable en lactantes sanos. Actualmente existen diversos enfoques terapéuticos, incluyendo el masaje infantil, destacando su efecto en el dolor y el llanto. A pesar de la variedad de tratamientos, se destaca la falta de evidencia sólida sobre su eficacia absoluta. OBJETIVOS: El propósito de este estudio es revisar la literatura existente sobre los efectos del masaje en el tratamiento y la mejora de la calidad de vida de los bebés que sufren de cólicos, centrándose en la duración del llanto y/o el tiempo de sueño. METODOLOGÍA: Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en las bases de datos de Medline, PEDro, Cochrane, SciELO y ERIC, utilizando términos asociados con el masaje y el cólico del lactante. Por otro lado, también se hizo una búsqueda manual en Google Scholar. RESULTADOS: En esta revisión se incluyen 6 artículos, todos ellos valoran el efecto del masaje en llanto y/o sueño. El masaje abdominal pediátrico mejora los síntomas del cólico del lactante, aumentando la duración de sueño y disminuyendo la duración del llanto. DISCUSIÓN/CONCLUSIÓN: A pesar de que no existe una terapia óptima en el cólico del lactante, se demuestra que la fisioterapia ofrece numerosas alternativas de tratamiento, siendo la masoterapia una de las terapias más efectivas. Es beneficioso y produce un efecto relajante en los lactantes aumentando la duración de sueño y disminuyendo la duración del llanto.

Colic is described as a behavioural syndrome of unknown aetiology, characterised by persistent and inconsolable crying in healthy infants. Various therapeutic approaches are presented, including infant massage, highlighting its effect on pain and crying. Despite the variety of treatments, the lack of solid evidence for their absolute efficacy is highlighted. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to review the existing literature on the effects of massage in the treatment and improvement of the quality of life of infants suffering from colic, focusing on the duration of crying and/or sleep time. METHODOLOGY: A systematic search was carried out in the Medline, PEDro, Cochrane, SciELO and ERIC databases, using terms associated with massage and infant colic. In addition, a manual search was also carried out in Google Scholar. RESULTS: This review includes 6 articles, all of them assessing the effect on crying and/or sleep among others. Paediatric abdominal massage improves the symptoms of infant colic, increasing the duration of sleep and decreasing the duration of crying. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Although there is no optimal therapy for infant colic, physiotherapy has been shown to offer numerous treatment alternatives, with massage therapy being one of the most effective therapies. It is beneficial and has a relaxing effect on infants by increasing the duration of sleep and decreasing the duration of crying.
