This condition can lead to negative consequences at both emotional and clinical levels, impacting not only the patient’s health and their family environment, but also the healthcare team when facing the challenge of identifying and interpreting this emotional distress. OBJECTIVE: To describe how the nursing team perceives and interprets anxiety in preoperative pediatric patients aged 2 to 12 years, as well as to identify the main factors associated with its occurrence and to analyze how this perception varies according to the patient’s age and level of cognitive maturity. METHODS: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach will be conducted to explore in depth the experiences and perceptions of the nursing team regarding the subject of study. Data collection will be carried out through structured interviews based on a question guide, directed at these professionals in the surgical field, which will be recorded and evaluated through a process of thematic categorization. CONCLUSIONS: The nursing team is expected to perceive pediatric preoperative anxiety as a frequent and complex phenomenon, influenced by multiple individual, family, and contextual factors. Age and level of cognitive maturity are anticipated to play a major role in the onset of such emotional distress and in the way it manifests, which will require individualized clinical interpretation. Likewise, nursing experience and perception are expected to constitute fundamental tools for the identification and interpretation of preoperative anxiety, highlighting the need to strengthen training and competencies in pediatric emotional care.
