Introduction: Individuals with ASD who have minimal verbal skills—characterised by limited and poorly functional spoken language—often suffer from chronic pain and struggle to express it. Their atypical presentation limits carers’ ability to interpret their pain, reduces their quality of life and increases carer burden. Given this reality, family-based interventions are needed to facilitate the detection and communication of pain. Objective: To determine the efficacy of a family-based speech and language therapy intervention on pain communication in minimally verbal individuals with ASD, with a view to improving pain communication, the individual’s quality of life, the family’s quality of life, and reducing caregiver burden. Materials and methods: A randomised clinical trial involving 66 participants will be conducted. The control group will receive a speech and language therapy intervention exclusively for the individual with ASD, whilst the experimental group will receive a family-based speech and language therapy intervention focused on pain communication. Pain communication, the individual’s quality of life, the family’s quality of life and caregiver burden will be assessed before the intervention, after three weeks of intervention and at the end of the intervention. Work plan: The study will be conducted over a period of 15 months, from October 2025 to December 2026, and will be structured in five stages: planning, research design, implementation, data processing and analysis, and preparation of the final report. Discussion/Conclusion: Given the limited evidence in this field, this study represents an innovative proposal that could improve these outcomes. If the hypothesis is confirmed, it would represent a step forward in speech and language therapy aimed at functional communication needs.es_ES
