La autonomía del paciente geriátrico con demencia

Abstract

Habitualmente, como profesionales del ámbito asistencial, debemos tratar con pacientes geriátricos con demencia. Trabajar con este colectivo provoca muchos dilemas éticos, ya que muchas veces se deben tomar decisiones que afectan directamente al paciente, sin que éste pueda decidir por él mismo. En este trabajo, pretendemos responder a la siguiente pregunta: ¿Tiene autonomía el paciente geriátrico con demencia? Para ello, realizamos una revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva y hablamos sobre la aparición y evolución de la bioética, haciendo hincapié en la autonomía y comparando los diferentes puntos de vista propuestos por autores importantes de la historia. Además, mostramos la protección legal de nuestro paciente geriátrico con demencia; y por último, estudiamos tres casos clínicos del paciente anciano con demencia, y proponemos posibles soluciones. Como conclusión, decir que bajo nuestro punto de vista, la autonomía también debe ir ligada a los actos, no solo a la toma de decisiones.

Usually as health’s professionals, we should treat with geriatric patients with dementia. Working with them, causes a lot of ethical dilemmas, because a lot of times, it must take decisions that affect to the patient directly, and he can’t decide by himself. In this document, we pretend to answer the next question: The geriatric patient with dementia has really autonomy? We realize an exhaustive bibliographic revision to be able to answer, and we speak about the appearance and the evolution of bioethics, emphasizing in the autonomy and making a comparison of the different points of view proposed by important authors of the history. Also, we show the legal protection of our geriatric patient with dementia; and finally, we study three clinical cases of the geriatric patient with dementia, and we propose possible solutions for the cases. As a conclusion, our point of view is that the autonomy should be linked to the acts, not only to the capacity of making decisions
