Terapia asistida con animales en personas con Alzheimer

Abstract

La Enfermedad de Alzheimer es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa cada vez más prevalente en nuestro país, cuya esperanza de vida cada vez es mayor (79 años en varones y 85 años en mujeres). Actualmente existen diversas terapias dirigidas a personas de Tercera Edad institucionalizadas, concretamente, afectadas por la Enfermedad de Alzheimer, y la gran mayoría tienen como objetivo mejorar la calidad de vida de éstos. Los animales han demostrado tener habilidades beneficiosas para la mejora del estado físico, mental y social de estas personas, pero aún así, en España no hay una legislación vigente que ampare las Terapias Asistidas con Animales. Las terapias, especialmente con perros, han mostrado disminuir el estrés, la Tensión Arterial (TA), la ansiedad y facilitado la socialización entre personas. El rol de enfermería en estas terapias es importante dado los conocimientos del profesional sobre las necesidades y cuidados de los pacientes con Alzheimer. La enfermera debe de tener un título o certificado que la acredite para poder dirigir estas terapias y que sean lo más efectivas posible.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease increasingly prevalent in our country, whose life expectancy is increasing (79 years men and 85 years women). There are currently several therapies directed at the Senior Citizens institutionalized specifically affected by Alzheimer's disease, and most aim to improve the quality of life of these. Animals have shown incredible skills to improve the physical, mental and social well-being of people but in Spain there isn’t legislation that protects the Animal Assisted Therapies. Therapies, especially whit dogs, have been shown to decrease stress, blood pressure (BP), anxiety and facilitated socializing with people. The role of nursing in these therapies is important because professional knowledge about the needs and care of Alzheimer's patients. The nurse must have a certificate attesting to the direct these therapies and are as effective as possible.
