Variables psicológicas y su influencia en el consumo de sustancias tóxicas en la adolescencia

Abstract

Se realizó un estudio basado en una muestra de 108 adolescentes, de edades comprendidas entre 14 y 18 años, de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) y Bachillerato, en el Instituto de Educación Secundaria Bellvitge, situado en la localidad de L´Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). El objetivo principal de este estudio consistió en estudiar las variables psicológicas; autoestima, bienestar subjetivo, ansiedad y depresión, y su influencia en el consumo de sustancias tóxicas como el tabaco, alcohol y cannabis en la adolescencia. Para ello, se pretendió responder a tres hipótesis realizadas por los investigadores; la primera, una autoestima baja aumenta el consumo de sustancias; la segunda, el bienestar subjetivo actúa como factor protector frente al consumo de sustancias; y la tercera, un estado de depresión con altos niveles de ansiedad fomenta el aumento de consumo. Los resultados del estudio indican, que la variable ansiedad si influye directamente en el consumo de tabaco, mientras que el resto de variables como la autoestima, la depresión y el bienestar subjetivo no ofrecieron ningún resultado significativo respecto a las otras sustancias como el alcohol y el cannabis. En conclusión, se puede observar como la muestra estudiada constata una tendencia a una disminución del consumo de tabaco, por lo que un mayor número de jóvenes no lo consumen, y así lo demuestran los estudios bianuales realizados por el Plan Nacional de Drogas 2014-2016. This study is based on a sample of 108 teenagers between 14 and 18 years old, who are students of IES Bellvitge High School in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). The main purpose of the study was to assess the impact of psychological variables (self-esteem, subjective well-being, anxiety and depression) on toxic substances consumption, like tobacco, alcohol and cannabis in the adolescence. To achieve this, three hypothesis proposed by investigators were tried to be answered; first, a low self-esteem increases the substances consumption; second, subjective well-being acts as a protective factor against substances consumption; and third, a depressive status along with high levels of anxiety lead to an increase of consumption. The results of the study show that anxiety has a direct impact on tobacco consumption, while the rest of psychological variables like self-esteem, depression or subjective well-being didn’t show any relevant correlation with the other substances, like alcohol and cannabis. In conclusion, the analyzed sample shows a reduction trend on tobacco consumption, that is, a growing number of teenagers don’t consume according to the biennial study carried out by the National Drug Plan 2014-2016.
